Build Bibliographies With Zotero

Another powerful feature of citation management software is that it can automatically build bibliographies for you. By using the records of articles, books, reports and more that you save in Zotero, the software can create in-text citations and bibliographies in the style that you choose. Of course, you must double-check that these are created correctly, as the result is only as good as the data in the records.

What do I have to do?

  1. Install the desktop app for Zotero. When you install the desktop app for Zotero, plug-ins for Microsoft Word and for Google Docs also get added.
  2. Ensure that the Zotero app is open on your computer.
  3. Open a new word processor document.
  4. Go to the Zotero section of the menu.
  5. Select Add/Edit Citation to insert an in-text citation. A Zotero pop-up menu will appear.
  6. Select the citation style of your choice. You can click on Manage Styles to download and install more citation styles.
  7. Search by title or author to find the citation, and press enter to insert the in-text citation.
  8. When at the end of your document, select Add/Edit Bibliography to insert the auto-generated bibliography.
  9. All done!
