Your high school seniors will be our first-year students... will they be ready?
The Leddy Library invites all high school teachers from the Windsor-Essex County area to work with us in helping to make the transition from high school to university easier on senior students. One of the ways in which the Leddy Library extends its research facilities to your high schools is by offering instructional services which are designed to foster the information literacy levels of your students. Our pedagogical approach to information literacy is based upon the Leddy Library Information Literacy Policy and the Association of College and Research Libraries' Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education.
Why is information Literacy important?
Information literate students will not only have a higher likelihood of academic success, but will also have the ability to transfer their literacy skills into other areas of their lives - personal, professional, and socio-political. It is crucial for students to become independent learners who can find and reflect critically upon information in all fields and formats if they are to function as effective members of the information society.
Description of an Instruction Session
The purpose of this program is to give high school students the opportunity to learn and practice reserach skills that will enhance their future university education and prepare them for life in an information-based society.
A typical session includes:
- Tour: Students will be taken on a short tour of the Leddy library facilities only. If you would like to arrange for your class to learn more about the campus or to have a campus tour, please contact the University of Windsor's Office of Student Recruitment.
- Hands-on Session: Lectures take place at our on-site computer lab. Students will have the opportunity to practice searching the library catalogue and databases throughout the session and/or to do research for an assignment you have given them. Library staff members are always available to help students during and after sessions.
- Library Cards: Teachers can request borrowing cards for their High school students that will enable them to borrow books from our general collection. To ensure cards and accounts are ready the day of your visit, requests should be submitted 2 weeks in advance.
Sessions can be altered depending on the amount of time you have available for your class.
