ORCID

Welcome to Leddy Library's ORCID Help Guide. Navigate this guide to learn what an ORCID iD is, why you should have one, how to create and populate your profile, and more about ORCID at UWindsor.

Introduction

ORCID, which stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID, is a free, unique, persistent identifier (PID) for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. ORCID’s vision is to connect all those who participate in these activities. ORCID users are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time.

People use “ORCID” and “ORCID iD” interchangeably, but what they’re referring to is a 16-digit number and the associated record (sometimes called a profile) that stores automatic links to all their research/scholarship. Please see ORCID + Researchers for more information.

Benefits of ORCID
Benefits of ORCID: Name disambiguation and flexibility (Distinguishes you from other researchers with your same name, and allows you to claim all the names you have published under), Credit (Helps ensure all you scholarly work is recognized), More time for research (Auto-population features, and the ability to allow trusted organizations to add your research information to your ORCID record, reduces the administrative burden on you), Customizable visibility (You have control over who sees which pieces of your information), Participation across the research lifecycle (Publishers, funders, and others across the research lifecycle may ask for a scholar's ORCID iD), portable profile data (When your career takes you to new places, your ORCID iD goes with you), Enhanced discoverability (Increases the findability and discoverability of your scholarly work).
