2025 Review of Former Compact Storage Materials

  • Timeline: Expected completion date of Winter 2026
  • Point of contact: Roger Reka, Acting Head, Collections and Licensing Services
  • Status: Ongoing

Over this summer, Leddy Library collections librarians undertook a review of materials that had been previously housed in the compact storage area, a space which is now repurposed for the Archives and Special Collections. The is review was done to determine the future of these materials, with possible outcomes including retention and relocation within the library or withdrawal from the collection.

These items were originally moved to compact storage in the early 1990s, having come from both circulating and non-circulating stacks. At the time, they were deemed low-use but still valuable enough to retain in the collection.

Because compact storage required users to request materials, we have usage data spanning several decades. Overall, usage has been very low. However, we recognize that historical usage does not necessarily reflect future relevance or potential.

As per our existing policies and procedures, UWindsor faculty members will have the opportunity to provide feedback on any materials identified for withdrawal. Please watch this space for further updates about the Review of Former Compact Storage Materials.

Next steps:
  • Collections librarians identify materials that may be candidates for withdrawal
  • Faculty members in relevant departments are invited to review the proposed withdrawal list and provide feedback
  • Based on faculty input and internal assessment, final decisions are made regarding each item
  • Materials are either relocated within the library or withdrawn from the collection
