Half of taxpayer funded research will soon be available to the public
Similar to the National Institutes of Health open access policy that requires all the research they fund to be made publicly available within 12 months, other federal agencies in the US will soon require the research they fund to be made available open access.
"Deep inside the $1.1 trillion Consolidated Appropriations Act for 2014 is a provision that requires federal agencies under the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education portion of the bill with research budgets of $100 million or more to provide the public with online access to the research that they fund within 12 months of publication in a peer-reviewed journal." Similar changes are also being developed in Canada for research funded by SSHRC and NSERC. The feedback phase of the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy draft has been completed and a final version should be released in the fall of 2014.
