Leddy Library is undergoing a significant and exciting transformation that reflects the Leddy Library’s commitment to the University of Windsor’s academic mission and to the evolving needs of our students, faculty, and broader campus community. We are currently updating our services, our collections, our spaces, and our organizational structure.
Our purposeful transformation is continuing through a thoughtful and professionally-guided review of some of our collections. This work is being approached with care and begins with the review and weeding of select print serials that are duplicated with electronic access, ensuring no loss of access to content, as well as the review and update of the Curriculum Resource Centre. Collection maintenance is a routine and essential function of academic libraries. Leddy Library’s Collections and Licensing Services Unit is applying their expert knowledge and reviewing circulation data, curricular changes, faculty and student input, and research priorities to inform their decisions. Leddy Library remains committed to stewarding a curated and valued print collection, while also recognizing the increasing demand for seamless, online access to academic resources. We are also excited to introduce enhancements to our collection spaces including a new Quick Reads area on the first floor of the main building.
This work will assist in the renewal of our facilities which not only addresses aging infrastructure, but also supports how today’s students study, how researchers access information, and how knowledge is shared and created. With input from students, faculty, and staff, we are redesigning spaces to promote academic success, inclusion, and wellbeing. Wellness rooms and caregiver rooms for student and faculty with young children were added last year to support the needs of our diverse users. Adding to these supportive spaces, we anticipate the addition of a breastfeeding and pumping room in Fall 2025. We are also looking forward to the major renovation of the student study spaces in the west building thanks to the generous donation of the Graduate Students Society.
These changes also complement the organizational restructuring of our internal teams. Reflecting new ways of working and the complexity of academic library services, Leddy Library has established four core service units: Access & Discovery Services, Collections & Licensing Services, Research & Publishing Services, and Teaching & Learning Services. This model allows us to better align staff expertise with campus needs, support strategic priorities, and engage in more focused collaboration with our academic and administrative partners.
Leddy Library’s transformation reflects academic libraries’ enduring commitment to evolving in response to the needs of the scholarly community. Guided by professional care, strategic vision, and deep commitment to the University of Windsor, we are building a library that embraces digital technologies, acknowledges the lasting value of print collections, and brings to the forefront both the people of Leddy Library and the community we serve.
