In order to assist instructors in their efforts to operate responsibly under the Copyright Act of Canada, Leddy Library offers a centralized service to clear copyright on protected materials to be used for classroom instruction.
If instructors chose to copy from protected materials to make digital copies available in Blackboard Learn or through Library Course Reserves - they can use this service to make sure copyright is cleared.
Before making the decision to copy from protected sources, instructors are strongly encouraged to work with their Liaison Librarians to identify alternative sources for classroom instruction from the vast amount of digital content available through library subscriptions, Creative Commons licenses, Open Access websites or materials not under copyright protection (public domain). See alternative online resources.
To use the service,
- For Blackboard Learn sites: Instructors should use the form below to get clearance before making digital copies of protected materials for uploading to your Blackboard Learn site.
- For Leddy Library Course Reserves: Instructors should follow regular procedures to place materials on course reserve or electronic reserves. Library staff will ensure copyright is cleared where necessary (see Placing Materials in Course Reserves).
- It often takes several weeks to get copyright cleared; allow at least 6 to 8 weeks for the library to obtain clearance
- Each new use (i.e. semester) requires a new clearance request
When using the form, be prepared to attach a file listing the citations of readings that need to be cleared.
Materials will be processed as soon as they are received. Library staff will communicate directly with instructors as necessary to ensure that materials are cleared in a timely manner. This service is only available for use by current faculty staff and students of the University of Windsor.
