Philosophy Books

The library's collection can be searched online through Omni, our academic search engine. Learn about using Omni from our guide

While the library holds thousands of ebooks in philosophy, many titles are still only available in print. These works are are organized by the Library of Congress classification system and can be found in together in the same location in the library. When you visit the library it can be helpful to browse through our book stacks on the 2nd floor of the main building to discover titles you might have missed in an online search. Even if you can't visit the library, you can vitually browse our collections by call number. The table below outlines the typical call numbers for philosophy.

 B Philosophy (General)
Includes historical periods, special topics, regional and religious philosophy
 BC Logic
 BD Speculative philosophy
 Includes metaphysics, epistemology, ontology,cosomology
 BH Aesthetics
 BJ Ethics
 BL Religions, Mythology Rationalism

There are limitations to the Library of Congress system. Particularly when it comes to interdisciplinary research. Some books which are of interest to philosophers might be located elsewhere in the library. For example, Bertrand Russell's Principia Mathematica is classified with mathematical works and is on the 3rd floor. This is where OMNI can help you discover new areas of interest for browsing. When you find a book of interest, always note the call number so that you can find resources outside of the B-BL.

Articles

Peer reviewed journal articles in philosophy can be discovered using OMNI. However, it can often be more effective to search in databases and collections the cover philosophy exclusively. Such key collections can found in our Philosophy Subject Guide.

Google Scholar is also an excellent place to search for articles. Just make sure that when you are off campus that you configure the University of Windsor as your library in the Google Scholar settings. That way you'll be able to login and download articles that the Library subscribes to for you.
