Off-campus access

Many of the online resources that we subscribe to are restricted to University of Windsor users. When you’re off-campus you may encounter a paywall when you try to access an academic journal, book or database — even for the resources that we subscribe to.

To avoid the paywalls while off-campus, you’ll need to prove your affiliation to the university by using links that originate from the library website, or by using a VPN to connect to the university network.

Use the library’s website with your UWinID

The easiest way to access online resources while off-campus is to access the resources directly from the library’s website (leddy.uwindsor.ca). With this approach, you shouldn't attempt to go directly to journal, book or database websites — you will need to get to them from our website.

Simply start from the library website and connect to articles, journals, eBooks and videos through Omni, or one of the subject-specific databases through the research tools page. You will be prompted to log-in with your UWinID to prove your affiliation. You will notice that the URL for the resource will change to include a university address (such as “ledproxy2.uwindsor.ca”) — this means its working!

Durable links to library resources
Create bookmarks to our online resources that are durable and reliable when you want to connect to them, both on- and off-campus. Shortened links from Leddy Library that begin with led.uwindsor.ca already contain a proxied link and will work both on campus and off. You can find these shortened links from our A to Z list of online resources (e.g., http://led.uwindsor.ca/psycinfo). These shortened links are updated by our staff when there are changes to the resources.

Connect to the university network with a VPN

Access our online resources just like you are on campus by using a virtual private network (VPN) to connect to the university network while you're off-campus. A VPN provides secure remote access from your device to the university network and makes it seem as if it is on the campus network by setting up a tunnel that encrypts all traffic between your computer and the university firewall. When you visit a journal, book or database website directly, you will be identified as a UWindsor user without needing to go to the library website first.

Visit the campus ITS website for instructions on how to set up a VPN for your computer:

Configure your citation manager to access the library's resources

Some citation managers have the capability to connect with the library's systems in order to search our collection or to automatically retrieve the full-text PDFs of the references.

Zotero's Library Lookup feature will try to locate your items in an online library catalogue, while EndNote's Find Full-Text capability automatically locates and download full-text files from references in your citation manager. These features require one or both of the following URLs:

OpenURL Pathhttp://ca01.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/view/uresolver/01UTON_UW/openurl
Authentication URL: http://ledproxy2.uwindsor.ca/login
