Wireless Access

Purpose and Scope:
To describe wireless access services at Leddy Library
Procedures:

Wireless Access
As of January 2006 the library has sixty seven wireless access points up and running. These access points provide complete coverage throughout both library buildings. For more information in regards to using this service please go the campus wireless website at http://www.uwindsor.ca/wireless or see the student IT Consultants in the library.
A wireless connection will give you access to e-mail and the Internet as well as most of the library databases. You will need to use your own applications, such as a Web browser and FTP and Telnet programs. Currently, there is no access to the Student Novell Network's software or library network printers.
The library has a limited number of Wireless laptop cards that you can use to access the wireless network if your laptop does not have a wireless card. These are available from the Reserve Counter.
We also have a limited number of USB flash drives at the Reserve counter that you may use to transfer files from your laptop to one of our workstations in order to print your work.
Wired Laptop Connections
Where can I use my laptop in the library?
We have wired network connections available for students to plug in their laptop computers. The connections are located as follows.
Leddy Library Main
Main Floor: 4 desks overlooking main staircase, 2 jacks located near workstation M1003
Graduate office area: 4 open style carrels in centre core
Leddy West
Main Floor: 4 carrels on east wall just north of CRC desk
Second Floor: 4 carrels east wall directly above connections on Main Floor
Third Floor: 4 carrels east wall directly above connections on Main Floor
What Resources Are Available To Laptop Connections ?
A wired connection will give you access to e-mail and the Internet as well as most of the library databases. You will need to use your own applications, such as a Web browser and FTP and Telnet programs. Currently, there is no access to the Student Novell Network's software or library network printers.
The Library has a limited number of ethernet patch cables available for loan at the Reserve counter. The call number for these cables is ZPR000.B144
What Problems May Occur ?
As with any computer system, installing software or hardware may corrupt your system, and possibly make it unusable. Make sure you understand what you are doing and make backups beforehand. Usually, the only problems that occur are with modem conflicts. Sometimes, if a modem is already installed, it may have to be uninstalled , the ethernet adapter installed, and then the modem re-installed when you want to use it.
What Type of Ethernet Adapter Is Recommended ?
Students need to purchase their own ethernet adapter. They should check with their computer vendor before purchasing one, but most PCMCIA ethernet cards should work. Cards made by Xircom Inc. work well and may be purchased from CCD or the University Bookstore.
Guidelines:
(Exceptions to the rule)

Patrons must have UWin I.D. to have wireless access. Therefore external borrowers and direct borrowers do not have wireless access.
