Direct Borrowers

Purpose and Scope: 
To explain the procedure for processing a patron record and card for a Direct Borrower
Procedures: 

-Direct Borrowers are members of other university communities who are granted free borrowing privileges at Leddy Library.
-the 3 different agreements that govern borrowing policies for other university community members are:

(a) The Canadian Universities Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement
(b) INFOPASS
(c) OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program

(a) The Canadian Universities Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement extends free reciprocal borrowing privileges to students, faculty and staff from participating Canadian Universities (http://www.curba.ca/rbprov.html).

-privileges for direct borrowers from Canadian universities include:
-15 item borrowing limit, 2week loan, renewable X 3
-no placing holds, using I.L.L.O. or borrowing
reserve items
-no remote database access

Members of other Canadian Universities borrowing at U. of W. (see http://www.curba.ca/rbprov.html):
-patron must fill out an External Borrower’s Application form and show valid I.D. card from home university
-register the patron (create a patron record):
-username: patron’s email address
-password: barcode number
-patron ID type: Other
-patron ID: leave blank
-patron category: Reader
-expiry date of the card: 1 year from the current date
-Alert Note: DIRB - name of university – expiry date is (e.g.) Nov. 1, 2010

-give patron a UWin Guest Card; make a label for the card with his/her name and affix it to the front of the card; place the barcode over the existing number on the back of the card
-provide patron with a copy of Services for External Borrowers
-place External Borrower Application in the cash register

(b) INFOPASS is an agreement that allows University of Windsor students to borrow up to 3 books from libraries in the Detroit Metro area, if the books are not available at Leddy or Law libraries. Wayne State University and Michigan State University also participate in INFOPASS.

-privileges: 3 books, 2 week loan; renewals require new INFOPASS

INFOPASS holders borrowing from Leddy Library:
-patron must have INFOPASS, valid student I.D. and a 2nd piece of picture I.D. to verify identity and address
-date on INFOPASS must not be more than 10 days old
-if patron is a new borrower, patron must fill out an External Borrower’s Application form

-register the patron (create a patron record):
-username: patron’s email address
-patron ID type: Other
-patron ID: leave blank
-patron category: Reader
-expiry date of card: 2 weeks from current date (due date of books)
-Alert Note: INFOPASS – expiry date is (e.g.) Nov. 1, 2010

-place barcode on INFOPASS (do not give patron a UWin Guest Card)
-provide patron with a copy of Services for External Borrowers
-staple INFOPASS to External Borrower application and place it in the cash register

(c) OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program (Canada & U.S.)

For Faculty from other Universities borrowing at Leddy Library:
-must show OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program card, valid I.D. from home university and a 2nd picture identification to verify identity and address

-privileges: -15 item borrowing limit, 2week loan, renewable X 3
-no placing holds, using I.L.L.O. or borrowing
reserve items
-no remote database access
-patron must fill out an External Borrower’s Application form

-register the patron (create a patron record):
-username: patron’s email address
-password: barcode number
-patron ID type: Other
-patron ID: leave blank
-patron category: Reader
-expiry date of the card: end of the term
-Alert Note: OCLC - name of university – expiry date is (e.g.) Nov. 1, 2010

-give patron a UWin Guest Card; make a label for the card with his/her name and affix it to the front of the card
-place the barcode over the existing number on the back of the card
-provide patron with a copy of Services for External Borrowers
