Current Overview in a Particular Jurisdiction

The website for the relevant government ministry usually has a wealth of information, e.g. legislation, guides, listings/links to administrative bodies (agencies, boards, tribunals, commissions), news, policy proposals. Most of the judicial administrative bodies also have their own sites.

A few examples:

Ontario. Ministry of Labour
Ontario. Ministry of the Attorney General
Canada. Department of Human Resources and Skills Development
Canadian Human Rights Commission

Statutes and Regulations

The online government versions of the statutes and regulations offer the latest consolidation as well as point-in-time and keyword full-text access. The federal statutes and regulations are updated on a weekly basis. The Ontario statutes and regulations are updated continually, with new source law being available within 2 business days. For longer, more complicated statutes, the commercial print and online annotated consolidations with indexes are sometimes still easier to use. See the Library Catalogue for these.

If you need to find current bills or if you are interested in the development of legislation and policy analysis, the Parliament of Canada and/or the Legislative Assembly of Ontario websites are a great resource.

Cases and Decisions

CanLII (Canadian Legal Information Institute)
A free online service that covers sources of Canadian law (legislation, court cases, decisions from boards/tribunals) from federal, provincial, and territorial jurisdictions. Check "Scope of Databases" (bottom-centre of website) for a list of the databases, the years of coverage, and last update.

Labour Spectrum
Covers labour relations decisions and cases; the Labour Arbitration Cases (L.A.C.) go back selectively to 1948 and are current to within a week; these cases have hypertext links to related cases/decisions and to sections in the Brown and Beattie treatise; the Canadian Labour Arbitration Summaries (C.L.A.S.) go from 1986 to the present.

Canadian Human Rights Reporter : CHRR Online
The main database covers human rights decisions from all jurisdictions from 1980 until the current year. Click on Subscriber Login; use the search function; the most recent decisions are contained in Current Law Notes (see link at top of home page).

Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw
These databases extensively report  cases/decisions. However, they can only be accessed on-site at the Law Library.

Canadian Law Reporters
A guide to Canadian case citations that lead to hundreds of print law reporters available in the Law Library.

Court and Administrative Justice Boards/Tribunals Web Sites
Most now have their decisions online, although the keyword/subject access may be limited. For the less prominent decision-making bodies that are not covered by CanLII or the commercial services, going direct to their web site may be the only online option.
