External Borrowers

Purpose and Scope: 
To provide information and to explain the procedure for processing a patron record and card for an external borrower
Procedures: 

Information:

An External Borrowers Card allows people not affiliated with the University of Windsor to borrow books and videos from the Leddy Library.

Who can apply: External Borrower Cards are available at no cost to the following groups, with the presentation of appropriate identification:
• University of Windsor Alumni
• Canadian University faculty, students and staff
• U of W Giving Campaign members
• Visiting Professors and Post-Doctoral Fellows of Canadian institutions
• St. Clair/Lambton College faculty only
• Wayne State University faculty

Adult permanent residents (18+) of Essex, Lambton, and Kent counties may purchase an External Borrowers Card:
• $ 20.00 for 4 months borrowing privileges
• $ 50.00 for 1 year borrowing privileges

How to apply: Application for an External Borrowers card must be made in person at the Leddy Library Circulation Desk and must be accompanied with photo-identification and proof of address.

Procedures:
-the 2 categories of external borrowers are:
(a) U. of W. Alumni
(b) Borrowers who are not U. of W. Alumni

-privileges for all external borrowers include:
-15 item borrowing limit (books and videos only)
-2 week loan, automatic renewals X 8weeks (if no
holds are pending)
-no placing holds, using I.L.L.O. or borrowing
reserve items
-no remote database access

External Borrowers only have access to databases via the public access (stand-up) computers. They cannot log into the sit-down computers and they do not have remote access to databases. To have access to the sit-down computers, alumni borrowers may request a reactivation on their UWin email address (see Alumni Borrowers and Computer Access).

(a) University of Windsor Alumni
-patron must fill out an External Borrower’s Application form and show photo identification with proof of address
-proof of graduation must be established either by the patron, via the on-line alumni list, or by calling the registrar’s office

-ALWAYS CREATE A NEW INTERNAL RECORD FOR ALUMNI BORROWERS
-ensure that the patron has no fines on his/her student account – if there are old fines, these must be paid before patron can borrow on their new external borrower card
-register the patron (create a new internal patron record):
-Primary identifier: patron’s email address
-User group: Community Borrower
-Expiration date: 1 year from the current date
-Add Note: Community Borrower (alumni)
expires (e.g.) Nov. 15, 2015
-make patron’s barcode an identifier

-borrowing cards for alumni of the University of Windsor are free
-give patron a UWin Guest Card; make a label for the card with his/her name and affix it to the front of the card; place the barcode over the existing number on the back of the card
-provide patron with a copy of Services for External Borrowers
-place External borrower application in cash till

(b) Community Members who are not U. of W. Alumni
-patron must fill out an External Borrower’s Application form and show photo identification with proof of address
-register the patron (create an internal patron record):
-Primary identifier: patron’s email address
-User group: Community Borrower
-Expiration date: either 4 months or 1 year
from the current date, depending of the fee paid by the
patron
-Add Note: Community Borrower –
expires (e.g.) Nov. 1, 2015
-make paton’s barcode an identifier

-give patron a UWin Guest Card; make a label for the card with his/her name and affix it to the front of the card; place the barcode over the existing number on the back of the card
-the cost of the card is $20 for a 4 month card or $50 for a 1 year card
-add bill and take payment for card
-provide patron with a copy of Services for External Borrowers
-staple receipt to External Borrower application and place them in the cash till
